In 2008, Nexans recycled nearly 22,000 tons of cable manufacturing waste from its European and African sites and several thousand tons of end-of-life cables collected from its customers.
For 30 years, the Group has entrusted these collection and recovery services to its subsidiary, RIPS, which is located in the Calais (France) port area and both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. In 2008, Nexans created Recycable in which it holds a 36% stake alongside Sita, a Suez Environment subsidiary, in order to provide a comprehensive recycling solution.
The Group has transferred to Recycable the metal recycling resources of its subsidiary RIPS, and Sita has invested 4.5 million Euros in equipment used to recycle polymers from cable sheaths.
Copper and aluminum granules are melted down. Plastics are recycled into external cladding, sidewalk curbs or road cones. Grinding powder is recovered as packaging products.
Recycable supplies Nexans with recycled copper and aluminum.
Using an exclusive continuous casting process that has been implemented in the Lens (France) plant, Nexans was able to recover 12,000 tons of recycled copper powder as wire in 2008. The Group invested 10 million Euros into this exclusive process, making it an important supply source.
