Kate Rowland, Managing Editor of Intelligent Utility magazine, discusses the advantages of real-time line monitoring in her article entitled Ahead of the Storm : Weather Damage Averted by Line Smarts.
From the article..."Real-time line ratings, also called dynamic ratings, are being used primarily to optimize grid utilization, allowing the grid operator to know the true line capacity in real time. But another important piece to the puzzle isn improving system reliability."
The article also contains material from an interview with Ron Stelmak, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for The Valley Group. "It doesn't require large weather changes to get large changes in capacity...a barely noticeable change in the wind or sun has a dramatic effect" says Stelmak. Since Dynamic Line Ratings give operators greater information all the time, they can be proactive and prevent situations that cause line problems. Stelmak sums up, saying "Our primary focus is staying out of trouble to begin with."
