Nexans to supply cables for Centrica’s Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms
Paris, May 31, 2006 - The British company Centrica Energy has awarded Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, a contract to supply submarine cables for its Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms in the Greater Wash, five kilometres off the Lincolnshire coast. Contract value is in excess of 10 million euros.
The contract comprises 72 km of 36 kV 3-core XLPE high voltage submarine cables, including a fiber optic element. 40 km of cable will be installed to export the power from the offshore wind farms to land, while the remaining 32 km are array cables and will interconnect the individual wind turbines. The contract also includes power and optical fibers accessories, terminations and joints. The power export cable will be produced by Nexans' Halden plant in Norway, which is specialized in manufacturing long lengths of submarine cables, while the array cables will be produced at the Nexans plant in Hanover, Germany. Delivery is due for spring 2007.
Lynn and Inner Dowsing are two consented adjacent wind farms of 90 MW each, both comprising arrays of up to 30 wind turbines. Together they are expected to provide enough power for more than 130,000 homes and to reduce CO2 emissions by 500,000 tons in a year. After the power has been brought ashore by the submarine cables it will be transmitted by underground cables to a new substation to be constructed at Middlemarsh, Skegness.
"Offshore wind farms is an important market segment for Nexans and we have substantial experience of major contracts within this area, such as Horns Rev in Denmark, Smøla wind farm in Norway, Barrow wind farm in the UK, and the Arklow Offshore Wind farm in the Irish Sea", says Yvon Raak, Vice President Europe Area of Nexans.
