Category 6 cabling systems have been on the market for a long time and contractors are accustomed to installing these products. With 10 Gigabit Ethernet on the horizon contractors are being asked to install more Category 6a and shielded cabling systems. These systems require more installation time than standard category 6 systems.
Additional time should be allocated for the following tasks:
· Face plate/jack installation
· Cable lacing
· Cable preparation/stripping
· Jack and patch panel termination
Based on a model developed by Berk-Tek the following estimated cost difference between category 6, 6a and shielded have been developed. Please note that this is only an estimate and contractors should develop their own cost model based on their standard installation practices.
· Category 6 to Category 6a:
o Labor cost: 11%
o Total installation cost including labor and materials: 51%
· Category 6 to Category 6 Shielded:
o Labor cost: 25%
o Total installation cost including labor and materials: 60%
