Cutting-edge technology for the Smart Grid and industry leaders combined for a highly successful event.

GridWeek, the annual gathering for Smart Grid, provided an opportunity for organizations and businesses focused on Smart Grid to hold meetings and participate in collaborative sessions and learn from leading industry experts. The Valley Group, a Gold Sponsor, participated in the Grid Reliability: Hardening our Critical Energy Infranstructure session, where Mr. Sandy Aivaliotis, Senior Vice President of Operations, Technology and Business Development for The Valley Group, presented information on Real-Time Dynamic Line Ratings. More information on Mr. Aivaliotis.

About the session

A smarter grid should result in better reliability, faster system recovery, and a higher level of resiliency to system disturbances. This session explored various best practices to achieve higher reliability, faster system recovery and moving towards a self-healing grid.

More about GridWeek

The annual GridWeek, held this year from September 21-24, 2009, in the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC, was the key industry event to bring together professionals on all sides of Smart Grid. A realization is emerging that a new view of energy, beyond oil, coal and other fossil fuels, will result in decentralized components of the electricity grid, a far cry from the central generation and structured system of the past. A smart information network - The Energy Internet - for the electric grid is seen as necessary to manage and automate this new world. GridWeek is focused on this vision.

About The Valley Group

About
The Valley Group, a Nexans company
The Valley Group is the world leader in thermal rating systems for overhead transmission lines. Dynamic line rating is a recognized enabling technology for the Smart Grid, allowing utilities to know the true capacity of transmission lines in real time. Benefits include improving network reliability, relieving congestion, accelerating integration of wind farm generation into the existing network, and improving grid efficiency. Without accurate real time measurements provided by dynamic rating systems, utilities set their line ratings-the maximum capacity of their lines-based on inaccurate static weather assumptions, frequently leading to inefficient network usage and incorrect perceptions of line congestion, while potentially risking transmission network reliability and public safety. The Valley Group is the established industry leader in developing thermal rating technologies, software, and applications, having provided dynamic line ratings to over 100 utilities on 5 continents. Our new focus is to adapt the application of proven dynamic line rating technologies to the evolving Smart Grid environment.
