Bending Cabling Standards

Security systems are now attaching to the same (or parallel) networks with data and voice. But, attaching these systems and devices to a structured cabling infrastructure presents new challenges. The standards (mainly TIA-568) address guidelines for cabling, pathways, grounding, bonding and other facets when installing cable within a TR and out to the workstation outlet. However, these standards were written mainly for an office environment where workstation outlets are mainly used for data and voice applications. Security camera locations vary from installation to installation, environment to environment and sometimes the TIA-568 standards for commercial buildings do not apply. Concerns have arisen with the outlet configuration, distances, power and harsh environments.
