BICSI Winter 2011 Wrap-Up

Berk-Tek Takes BICSI By Storm

Berk-Tek was a very visible participant at the 2011 BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International, Inc.) Winter Conference, held in January at the Rosen Shingle Creek Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. In addition to creating traffic on the exhibit floor and interest in their booth, there were technical sessions presented by their industry experts. The week ended with Berk-Tek’s own Carol Everett Oliver, RCDD, ESS, receiving the coveted David K. Blythe Outstanding Member of the Year Award.

Berk-Tek Shows Off
Berk-Tek generated quite a bit of buzz and traffic at their booth with the live demo of the OneReach copper/fiber composite PoE extender system. The reel of CL3R-OF composite copper/fiber cable was terminated to a switch and monitor in the adjoining Pelco booth. The cable delivered power through the copper conductors and data through the fiber optic cable, which was converted to PoE at the device end, through an RJ-45 patch cord from the media converter to the Pelco IP Camera. This unique system allows power and data to be delivered to IP devices out to 4,000 feet.  In addition to this demo, Berk-Tek highlighted their past 50 years through a video, which ran constantly in the background of their booth. And to further commemorate their 50th anniversary, Berk-Tek sponsored the conference bags, which are distributed to all attendees during registration.
Enable the Cable Workshop
“Enable the Cable” Pre-Show Training Workshop
Together, Berk-Tek, Graybar, Fluke and Pelco sponsored a six-hour, hands-on workshop that covered IP surveillance systems trends and best practices. Designed for security and cabling contractors and installers, as well as I.T. managers, the audience actively participated in the design of a system – from installing and testing the cable to IP camera set up. This presentation and workshop covered the following topics:
  • Understanding the demands and differences of IP video surveillance system types and functions as well as analog vs. IP camera technology
  • Guidelines on selecting the most appropriate cable (fiber or copper, plenum or riser, indoor or outdoor)
  • Existing standards and upcoming standards -- Issues that are not currently addressed by the existing TIA standards, but are being addressed by the ANSI BICSI ESS Standards Committee (such as direct attach – plug vs. jack)
  • Testing overview of different tools and test procedures (difference between certifying, verifying and simple wiremap tests for copper and fiber). Karl Griffith and Carol Oliver

Speakers included:

·         Carol Everett Oliver, RCDD, ESS - Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company
·         Karl Griffith, RCDD – Graybar
·         Steve O’Hara, Fluke Networks

“The Path to the ESS Credential – The Designer’s Focus on Infrastructure Integration and Cloud Computing” Technical Presentation
This one-hour session comprehensively covered surveillance and network related chapters in BICSI’s ESSDRM.  Attendees got an exciting view of the comprehensive manual and were provided with a head start on appropriate BICSI review sessions. Topics covered in this section were the design of an IP camera infrastructure, the importance of structured cabling in IP Convergence and network integration. Carol Oliver and Steve Surfaro
The audience participated in a fun “Fact or Fiction” quiz, which tested their knowledge on topics covered in the ESSDRM.
Speakers included:
