Nexans Participates in CIGRE Colloquium on HVDC and Power Electronic Systems

Nexans is a Gold Sponsor and will Chair the Cable Technologies Session and present a paper in the Colloquium

Nexans is pleased to participate in the CIGRE Colloquium on HVDC and Power Electronics Systems including overhead line and insulated cable applications being held from Wednesday, March 7, through Friday, March 9, 2012, in San Francisco, California, USA.

The colloquium provides valuable information for engineers involved with all facets of power transmission including regulation, generation and transmission. The sessions will address issues such as how to efficiently transfer power over long distances as well as challenges facing the next phase of energy development.

CIGRE cites that the scope of the colloquium is “a range of topics encompassing the challenges transmission networks are presently facing or are likely to face in the future, and the role HVDC and power electronics will play in meeting those challenges.”

The colloquium is sponsored by the U.S. National Committee of CIGRE, Cigre Study Committees B1 Insulated Cables, B2 Overhead Lines and B4 HVDC and Power Electronics.

Specific topics to be covered are:

  • HVDC Conversion Systems
  • AC Applications
  • Overhead Lines
  • Cable Applications, specifically:
    • Long distance underground transmission DC cables
    • Applications for HVDC cable systems
    • AC or DC connections to offshore renewable energy power plants or other platforms
    • DC High Temperature Superconducting Cable (HTSC) technologies

On Thursday, March 8, Gunnar Evenset from Nexans Norway will be the Session Chair for the Cable Technologies track. The Nexans team of Pierre Mirabeau, Michel Gardelein, Ludovic Boyer from Nexans France,  Bjorn Sonerud from Nexans Norway, and Christian Frohne from Nexans Germany collaborated to produce a paper entitled “Development, Prequalification, and Type test of HVDC Extruded Cable Systems – an Illustration of CIGRE recommendations.”

The group will present this paper on Thursday, March 8, during the Cable Technologies track.
