PoE Without a Sweat

Berk-Tek Solutions

What About the Heat?

When transmitting power through copper conductors, there will be resistance, and this will generate heat. As more power is transmitted, more heat is generated. Heat is no friend to IP traffic on copper cabling. It weakens signal strength and makes IP traffic more prone to errors. Berk-Tek understands the technical challenges involved with PoE and we have solutions specifically designed to solve these challenges.

Additional Temperature Budget

The high max temperature ratings on Berk-Tek’s cables provide additional temperature budget. This means they can handle the heat generated by PoE, even when installed in the hottest plenum spaces.

Best Cable for High Power PoE

LANmark-XTP (Cat 6A) product and LANmark-IP (Cat 5e) are the best-performing solutions for High Power PoE. LANmark-XTP’s specially designed discontinuous shield acts like a heat sync to dissipate heat (without the need for grounding), whereas LANmark-IP’s larger AWG size and long twist lays minimize the amount of heat generated. Both products provide excellent PoE performance. In a bundle of 240 cables (10 fully populated 24-port patch panels), with 100W (802.3bt) of power energizing every pair in the bundle, LANmark-XTP and LANmark-IP each had a temperature rise of only 19˚C in the centermost cable. In comparison, traditional Category 5e products had a temperature rise of 37˚C.

Real World Testing

To accurately determine the effect of heat on a cable’s performance, testing scenarios must replicate real-world installation environments. To accomplish this, the engineers at Berk-Tek created a 100-meter, four-connector test where we simultaneously transmitted voice, data, video and PoE power, while heating the cable to its maximum temperature limit. We then tested voice, data, and video applications to find how Berk-Tek’s solutions would stand-up against the competition. To read the full test results, click here.
