Try Before You Buy

This morning I saw a TV commercial for a used car dealership that’s offering buyers a five-day money-back guarantee, allowing them to “try before they buy.” The gist of the commercial is this: If you buy a shirt and then change your mind about it the next day, you simply return the shirt to the store and get your money back. But what about something much more expensive like a car? Well if you buy from this dealership, you can drive the car for five days to make sure you’re happy with it. If not, you return it and get your money back.
They do raise a good point. A car is a pretty pricey investment to make based on research and a 10-minute test drive. What if you buy the car, drive it to Grandma’s the next day, only to discover that it doesn’t really perform well on all those back roads? Or what if the exterior color that looked like sleek jade green in the morning light, now looks like the iridescent teal dress your date wore to your junior prom? What if you invest a ton of money into something, only to find out later that it isn’t exactly what you were expecting?
Let’s apply that same logic to data centers. If you’re like most companies in the IT world, you put millions of dollars into installing, upgrading and maintaining your data center. It’s an enormous investment. And if you’re going to spend that kind of money on something, you want to make sure it will do what you need it to do – not only today, but 5, 10, 20 years from now.
But how can you get your hands on the products and get a feel for how they will work for you, without actually installing them? You have to install the products to see how they’ll perform, but you need to see how they perform before you invest in them. It’s a Catch-22.
